Hello, welcome to our Holy Hygge Home…
My name is Belle and I have been married to Zac for 17 years. We have a beautiful little family that God has given and created for us. We live a very different life (which you will know if you follow along), but it is “our life” and that part is very important to us. On this blog I share my recipes and creative ideas, as well as a diary of stories and photographs from our life.
Holy Hygge Home started as a digital notebook for the recipes, which I made in our everyday lives. I have been creating recipes since I was in my late teens, so these days I have countless notebooks lying about with clip-outs, stickies and scribbles that I sometimes have trouble deciphering — my family might as well give up trying. So even though I still write everything down in physical books, I started this blog in early 2022, so everyone could find my recipes more easily. Since then it has developed into a really nice little lifestyle blog with a members club and all.
We are a Danish/French family, Zac (father), Belle (mother) and our children Peppi and Teetee. We probably live what many would call a less ordinary life.
We have travelled to new and homey places every 3-6 months for over 10 years in a row (due to jobs/changing legislation). That lifestyle has only fuelled my desire to find peace and be a hobbit in homey surroundings, surrounded by flowers from a well-kept garden and all. But since we are a family with certain values and we have chosen to home school our children, we have had to travel instead of settling down. Shortly after we bought “our to-be ‘Hobbit homes'” in France, home schooling was heavily restricted, and since we do not want to live by rules that further hinder us from thriving as a family, we are currently a world-schooling family, who can only visit our own home 3 months a year. Or rather, a family looking for a country where we can feel at home again. We just haven’t found that place yet, even though we have looked on several continents.
Although it is a lifestyle that provides many experiences, I would never deny that traveling so extensively takes its toll on one’s worldly peace, and without Jesus it would never have been possible.
This lifestyle has limited our creative expression and our savings. This type of life provides many experiences and you become an expert in “problem solving” and finding quick solutions to almost everything that life may offer you. So what you could have put your hands, soul and money into gets consumed by solving problems instead, and when life is like this for over 10 years, yes, it can simply become less joyful (if you let it).
But no one promised us that life would be easy or happy! Society sells us the pursuit of happiness. Rather, Jesus said that the road to heaven was narrow. However, He promised that He would be there with us, as a pillar of peace in life, which makes it so much easier to navigate through difficult seasons. So, our foundation in life is our faith in Jesus Christ.
Then comes our Family and the ability to create and hold on to “Hygge” (a Danish cultural concept that has to do with an in-depth feeling of belonging, feeling at peace, feeling cozy and comforted in the moment, in a situation or at a social gathering). Even though life gives us lemons, it doesn’t have to mean that we can’t have a “Hyggelig” time with one another anyway.
I love creating things from scratch, whether it’s food, skincare, sewing, tying flowers, drawing, designing, decorating, fixing things up, making furniture and getting seeds to sprout, yes, it all makes me happy. I think it’s a deep human need, this ability to create, an ability God has given us. He created a special place for us to call home and here we are, to create in His spirit and image.
That’s also why this blog is important to me: it’s the only permanent place I have in which to create and communicate what I call ‘holy hygge’ — a way of passing on what comes to me from God by inspiring and sharing our experiences with others. It is only when we share what we create that it can actually materialize in the homes of others and perhaps create the same joy in them as it did in us.
We used to have a shop/café/business, a permanent place to create and share from. But I haven’t had a place like that for over 10 years now and that’s why it’s important that I can create and share my thoughts here instead. No matter where we are in the world!
A “creative” life can exist in any home or lifestyle. I create recipes and design things even though I’m on the other side of the planet; my urge to be creative doesn’t stop just because we travel.
Learning to use your hands in a digital world like the one we live in (or the one we’re forced into) is absolutely essential. We were created to create with our hands and minds. I believe most people feel unhappy and empty inside if they stop doing exactly that.
That’s why I write this blog: it pushes me to use my hands, my mind and my creativity consistently and to share what I’ve learned, experienced and figured out while living a life less ordinary. I hope it will inspire you or others to keep creating from scratch and remembering to use your hands in a world that is losing its soul. We are the only ones who can change that and every hand has its own mark from God, so keep creating with your hands!
Thanks for stopping by
Have a blessed day!
